Producthunt is my one stop shop to find interesting products. I came across NeoRhythm when I was browsing through Producthunt the other day.The one line explainer below the product title said that ‘NeoRhythm is a neurostimulation headband to hack your brain’. The headband uses pulsed electromagnetic frequencies (PEMF) to help you focus, energize, de-stress, sleep, meditate and handle pain. I was immediately ‘wow’ed by the idea of the product and started reading up about it.
After spending an hour reading about the company, the product, and about PEMF, I was impressed by how a small company had found a way to commercialize a widely existing, proven medical technology. But, I also had a lot of questions regarding the safety and privacy of the device. So, I reached out to Marko Kadunc, CEO of MDCN Tech Ltd. (the company behind NeoRhythm headband) and asked him a few questions.
In this week’s blog, let’s see how an ambitious company had tried to mass market a cutting edge medical technology and how will it benefit people.
Before getting to my interview with Marko Kadunc, let’s spend some time to understand what is PEMF
PEMF Therapy: A way to supercharge your cells
According to Bulletproof, PEMF therapy uses bursts of electromagnetic frequencies to heal damaged tissues, alleviate pain, and even to stimulate regeneration of organs.
In several countries, PEMF is considered a non-invasive way to approach to injuries, chronic pain, and even chronic conditions like depression and diabetes.
The way PEMF treats pain was interesting to read. According to an article by Oska wellness,
“Your whole body, including skin, bones, and organs, is composed of cells. The membranes of healthy cells have positive and negative magnetic charges. These charges are required to exchange ions carrying chemical elements your body needs to function, like calcium and potassium. Over time your cells deteriorate or get injured, and when that happens they lose their magnetic charges – and with them, the ability to exchange ions. Symptoms like inflammation, fatigue, and pain are caused by damaged cells with low charges. PEMF technology targets the affected area and restores cells’ healthy electromagnetic charges.”
Eventhough the technology is widely available, it is predominantly used to treat injury-related pain, inflammation and arthritis.
How is NeoRhythm different?
Brain waves are reflections of repetitive electrochemical activity in the brain and central nervous system. Our every activity is reflected in the form of brainwaves with a dominant frequency and accompanying frequencies.
There are five types of brain wave frequencies:
- Alpha waves (9-13 Hz) are dominant when we are relaxed – still awake but less alert and perceptive.
- Beta waves (14-30 Hz) are dominant when we are awake and our consciousness is normally alert.
- Gamma waves have the highest frequencies (30 Hz+) and are dominant in states with heightened perception.
- Theta waves (4-8 Hz) are dominant when we are in a state of reduced consciousness – light and REM sleep, dreaming or deep meditation.
- Delta waves (less than 4 Hz) are dominant when we are in deep sleep without awareness of our surroundings.
These frequencies of brainwaves are not just reflections of our state of mind – our state of mind can also be a reflection of these frequencies.
NeoRhythm emits scientifically confirmed frequencies that are characteristic for a certain state of mind. The brain adapts to these frequencies, reaching the desired state of mind such as sleep, deep meditation, relaxation, focus and more. By wearing it over different areas of your head, you can feel more energized, focus better, sleep better, etc.
Also, electromagnetic fields when reach the brain, produce small electrical currents, which stimulate blood perfusion, promote cellular repair and enable the cells to perform their function.(If you wish to read more about the science behind NeoRhythm, you can do it from here.)
And, NeoRhythm packages this technology and sells it for $249! No wonder it received 1466% more money than what was pledged initially.
Interview with Marko Kadunc
Even though I was impressed, I had a lot of questions about the safety and privacy of the device. Also, I wanted to know what would be the future of NeoRhythm. So, I reached out to Marko Kadunc, the CEO of the company to get some answers.
When did you get the idea to develop NeuroRhythm? What led to the “Eureka” moment?
Marko: We were inspired by the notion of how PEMF technology has been scientifically validated through many clinical and other scientific studies as efficient for solving and improving a variety of mental and physical symptoms. In addition to that, some countries (Canada, for example) have officially approved PEMF as an effective treatment for cancer, depression, anxiety, migraine, and other medical conditions. Consequently, the initial idea was born, why not use that technology in everyday life and promote self-care? Why not bring PEMF in our homes and avoid the longs hours in the waiting rooms of the clinics?
Great! Did someone experiment with a similar idea before?
Marko: Like all companies, we also have competition; however, their devices mainly have only one coil system, compared to our five coil system. So far, no one has ever developed a multi-coil structured device to stimulate the largest brain area until we have. TMS (much stronger devices of PEMF) are usually used to treat depression or for bone healing(pemf). The interest in investment in scientific studies of the wellness devices is very scarce. We also believe that products should be easy to use and comprehend, so we developed a gesture-controlled headband to aid users have a better user experience additionally.
The idea is interesting! But, how safe is the device? What kind of safety mechanisms are built into the device?
Marko: We can vouch for the users’ safety when using our device. It is based on PEMF, which is a safe, non-invasive technology that emits frequencies well understood and accepted by our brain and body. The PEMF frequencies look a lot like the frequencies we encounter in nature. There is a significant number of studies conducted to determine the effect of PEMF on improving or not different symptoms or conditions.
How will the users know if something is wrong with the device?
Marko: The package contains a magnetic field tester with which the customer will be able to test it. A very simple but efficient solution.
What data does the device collect when it is being used? And, what do you do with the data?
Marko: NeoRhythm does not collect data as it is not an EGG device. In fact, EGG would interrupt and interfere with the magnetic field emitted by the coils.
What is the future of NeoRhythm?
Marko: NeoRhythm is pre-prepared for a medical upgrade that will treat depression; however, it takes time to register and develop the treatment protocol. Technically NeoRhythm is already sufficient enough, but it is the regulatory compliance management to be solved. Our users should expect an update of the NeoRhythm – its app very soon. NeoRhythm will be customizable through the app in such a manner that the user will be able to define the stimulation intensity and brainwave frequency or select which coil should operate.
Products like Apple Watch and NeoRhythm are good examples of how cutting-edge technologies can be made more consumable without compromising on the user experience. I think this is just the beginning. We can see a lot more interesting medical devices in 2020.
